NW17 - Power/Internet Outages & Auditions

We begin the auditions / interview process tomorrow, W 2/17.  This will go on as scheduled.

BUT...

If you are dealing with a power / internet outage issue, please do not stress.  We will work it out as needed.  If at all possible, please contact me to let me know you cannot make your appointment due to outages, and we can reschedule.  If texting is the only way to reach me, you can text 503 577-8805 to let me know. Otherwise, please email matthew.b.zrebski@gmail.com.

It is critical that you not use this as "an excuse" to buy more time for your audition / appointment.  If we get too off schedule, it throws everything, so please be honest and only ask for a reschedule is absolutely necessary.

NW17 - New Plan Announcement!

Lincoln High School Drama in association with Teen West Project presents:

New Works 17:  Snapshot

With more understood about the pandemic, the plan for New Works 17 has changed!

OVERVIEW

Inspired by the need to allow individualistic expression by student artists during this unprecedented and historic time, Snapshot will feature 10-12 solo performers, each embodying a teenaged character in a solo-show microwork.  These short pieces will be inspired by the myriad challenges (personal, financial, educational, sociopolitical, etc.) seen in our country over the past many months – and represent many styles and genres…naturalism, drama, comedy, surrealism, speculative fiction, musical, thrillers, and more!  The current plan is that this will be presented as a pre-recorded, streamed event.  This will be the first time in New Works history that an all solo show event has been executed; this is the ideal time for such a unique offering.

INCLUSION

We honor all identities – all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, genders, abilities, body types, faiths, and sociopolitical views are respected.  You are welcome here.  The more diverse a society is and the more that diversity is celebrated, the richer a community will be.  Making art, especially in a lab filled with peers, can be very personal.  We demand a space that is respectful and develops trust.  We develop art within an apolitical space that uses storytelling and questions as the tools for thematic investigation.  We commit to not viewing others as sociopolitical abstractions, but as full human beings.  We commit to constructively criticize, never to tear down, but only to lift up.  We commit to coming from a place of kindness and love, not judgment.

NW17 INTENT FORM

There are multiple options for participating in this production:

1.  As a writer, partnering with an actor to write for them.

2.  As an actor, partnering with a writer to perform their work.

3.  As a writer / actor, performing their own work.

4.  As a design assistant (helping to make props, scenic, costume pieces available)

5.  As a member of the filming / editing crew.

The “NW17 Intent Form” will be available within 48 hours.  This form must be downloaded and filled out, then emailed to Matthew B. Zrebski by 5:00p on Monday, February 8th.  This form will declare your interests and commit you to the next part of the process.  The intent form will include instructions/options for submitting writing, live auditioning via Zoom, and live interviewing via Zoom during appointments TH 2/17 – SA 2/20.  For anyone with technical challenges / limitations, a video submission process will be available on a case-by-case basis.

NOTE:  For those in Teen West Ink (IB Theatre) who wish to submit writing for New Works consideration via their final project, please note when you submit (due TH 1/28 at 10:00p) that the solo piece you are submitting is to be considered your writing submission for Snapshot.  You can simply indicate this in your email.  You may also wait to submit through the standard process as detailed in the Intent Form.  You will need to submit an Intent Form even if you already submitted via Teen West Ink.

The full company will be announced Sunday 2/21 by 8:00p

REHEARSALS

This process will be largely driven by the students with rehearsal / mentorship sessions with Matthew B. Zrebski 1 to 3 times per week, typically for 45 – 90 minutes at a time.

The rehearsal windows (all via Zoom) are as follows:

2/22 – 4/10 (none during spring break)

M: 3:30p – 5:30p

T: 7:00p – 8:30p

W: 3:30p – 5:30p

TH: 7:00p – 8:30p

F: 6:00p – 8:00p

SA:  1:00p – 3:00p

Appointments will be scheduled during the above times, based on availability of the student artists.

4/12 – 4/25

TBD – these two weeks will be determined as soon as possible for potential additional online rehearsals as well as for video coordination and filming.

PUBLIC STREAMING

Snapshot will stream sometime between May 5 - 9.  There are multiple options for audience delivery being considered – more on that as final decisions are made.

NW16 - Cast Party

Here are the details regarding the cast party!  As noted below by the Hanfs, this is a private event and not officially sanctioned nor managed by Lincoln High School or Portland Public Schools.

Cast and Crew Families,

Below is the information for Saturday night’s (Dec. 14th) non-school sponsored New Works 16: Monumental Cast and Crew Party.  Lincoln Drama has a long-held tradition of celebrating the closing of each production with an all-night cast celebration. To keep this tradition alive, students must adhere to a strict policy of no alcohol, drugs, or tobacco/nicotine products of any kind. There will be adult supervision all night, and we will monitor behavior closely.

ADDRESS:
1033 NW Eloise Lane, Portland 97229
At the end of the cul-de-sac up the hill.  Street parking is VERY limited so try to carpool if you are driving. Feel free to park in our driveway if there’s space (our cars will be parked elsewhere).  You may also park around the cul-de-sac. Parents drop off and pick up or rideshare (Uber/Lyft) is suggested.

BRING:
Bring a snack to share, sleeping bag, pillow, and games. We will have additional snacks, drinks, and lots of games. We will provide a continental breakfast in the morning.

It is a VERY quiet street, so students will stay indoors.

TIME:
After the school after-Party (after closing, there is a short celebration at Lincoln for cast and crew only) to 8 am.

CONTACTS:
Stacey Hanf 503 351-7676
Russell Hanf 503 936-7167

RULES:
- No drugs. No alcohol. No tobacco products of any type.
- No reentry.
- When students leave, they must check out with an adult, to make sure they are safe and have someone responsible to drive.
- Any inappropriate behavior may reflect upon their ability to participate in Lincoln Drama in the future.
- No outside guests allowed

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions at all.

Best,
Russell and Stacey Hanf

NW16 - For the first time...

As we launch week two of this stellar festival, it's important to take that extra moment to think about the fundamentals of maintaining a great production. So often, after opening weekend, there is a strange let down. And after days off and a speed through pick-up, it can also feel like going on autopilot to reach the end.

One thing that had already begun to happen a bit last weekend was a lack of listening. Though things tightened up nicely in terms of pace and tempo...some actors began to get ahead of themselves. In short - they stopped experiencing the story for the first time.

And this is so key. Remember...many, many audience members who see the show this weekend will have not seen it yet.  And your job, every time to step on stage, it so live inside the character and the story for the first time...to drop in...to listen and react in the moment.

Another thing that happened last weekend by show 3 was a noticeable drop in vocal energy and projection.  The same people.  You know who you are. This goes for quite a few in Paradise - but there are some in every cast. Make sure you are keeping that awareness...that every single person in every single seat must hear the language and receive the story clearly. Always know that if you are the first few people to speak after a sound cue, you will need to be extra aware of your projection and clarity, because the audience's ears are making an adjustment in terms of where sound is coming from.

Bottom line: the show should improve, grow, expand, go deeper with more nuance...and even more stunning performances.  Challenge yourselves to do so.

I remain so very proud of this company. Have a blast this weekend!!!
