NW16 - Incident Report and Safety - 10/30/19

As some surely know by now, an incredibly usual and unfortunate event occurred this evening during rehearsal when someone opened the side door (by the band hall) and threw a large firework into the auditorium, resulting in an explosion - and then smoke, the fire alarms, and an evacuation. The cast of Humanicana, our SM team, and I were in the auditorium when this occurred.

Both the Fire and Police departments came. An investigation has been launched. We are so fortunate no one was harmed during the incident. As a result of this event, a new security protocol is being implemented.

Every single door to the auditorium, including side and backstage doors are to be locked at all times. This means when you arrive to rehearsal, you are to remain in the foyer until a stage manager or adult comes to get you. On breaks, a single door to the foyer will be opened and guarded until the break is over. And then it will be closed and locked once more.

This may sound incredibly scary - and the incident certainly was - but having been with the investigators for over an hour and having an in depth conversation with Principal Chapman, I can tell you Lincoln Admin. and Law Enforcement are ON IT.  And, there is no reason to believe this was a targeted crime. In other words, it does not appear "drama students" were targeted. In fact, the perpetrator very well may have believed the auditorium was empty. I am very confident we are safe to continue rehearsing and that the above policy will be sufficient. Custodial staff and security staff are also being vigilant and all measures will be taken to ensure the safety of the students and staff.

I also want to say how very proud I am of the students. If ever there was a time when a total "freak out" would have been justified, this was that time. But in fact, all remained remarkably calm, evacuated efficiently, and then comported themselves with great maturity. We are all shaken, and justifiably so - but I'm so impressed with how everyone handled this.

Let me know if you have any questions.

NW16: Rehearsal Friday 11/1

NW16: Monumental
Rehearsal Schedule
FRIDAY 11/1
Call Breakdown

Given our current progress in staging, it is no longer helpful to have an “all call / all day” rehearsal as previously planned for this Friday 11/1.  Instead, we will call each play for their own rehearsal throughout the day.  Please be a few minutes early to your call time.  History has proven that on “no school” days, actors tend to be late to rehearsal.  Let’s not continue that history, please.

12:00p – 2:00p

NW16 - Rehearsal Today - Shorter

Unfortunately, we still have a cast member who cannot make rehearsal for Make-Believe due to illness. We are lucky that Aidan Childs has agreed to come in and sub so we can get a reading in for the playwright (Natalia).

As a result of this, rehearsal will be shorter:

TODAY
TH 10/24
4:15p - 5:45p

This will allow us to read through and have a brief discussion.  Natalia and I will then have time to discuss next steps privately.

Thanks for everyone's patience on this. We will catch up next week!

NW16: Saturday Build Lunch Protocol

ALERT

For Saturday Build Dates, crew members are required to eat on campus.  There will only be a 30 minute dedicated lunch break and so leaving campus to get food and eat will take too long.  Please plan on bringing a sack lunch and snacks.

Prepare accordingly!

NW16 - Parent / Guardian Meeting Monday 10/28

To all parents/guardians of cast and crew members, there is a mandatory meeting scheduled for:

Monday 10/28
7:00p
Lincoln Auditorium

At this meeting, many things will be discussed, including:

-the history of the New Works Festival, it's mission, and details on this year's offering.

-a review of commitments of cast / crew.

-reminders of communication protocols

-the importance of parent/guardian/community support for this self funded program

-how parents/guardians/community members can volunteer to help the production

-a Q&A for parents/guardians

-and more!

Please do everything you can to attend as it will greatly help this entire, wonderful team to be on the same page!

Finally, it is important that every member of the cast and crew has filled out the online info form - and that all understand the importance of cast/crew fees. Please click HERE.
